Nau mai, haere mai.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Te Kura o Ōpāwaho - Opawa School. We have a long and strong history, opening as a school in 1872. The area known today as Opawa derives its name from the pa once located where the present day Judge St and Vincent Place intersect. It was known as Ōpāwaho, which refers to its function as a waho (outpost). It was a resting place for Ngāi Tahu travelling between Kaiapoi and Horomaka (Banks Peninsula). Ōpāwaho is the Maori name for the Heathcote River.
Our RIVER values guide us in our everyday learning, behaviour and decision making - Manaakitaka/ Respect,
KakauTapatahi/ Integrity, Voyager, Hiraka/ Excellence, Kaweka/ Responsibility. For our young learners we aim to encourage, model and develop capabilities for lifelong learning. We explicitly teach our school (RIVER) values that make up our Ōpāwaho Voyager. Ōpāwaho voyagers are on-board at Ōpāwaho when they are organised and ready for learning, have a positive attitude and are ready to give things a go!
The Te Kura o Ōpāwaho - Opawa School community consists of an excess of five hundred whānau, 317 students, 26 different nationalities, 21 teachers,17 support staff, Home and School/Whānau Group/Board of Trustees. We are one team.
We are excited about working with you, and your child(ren), and learning together. We have an amazing team – enthusiastic and talented students, dedicated, knowledgeable and caring staff; families/whānau who are supportive and welcoming and a school setting that is beautiful, with large open spaces and an operational school pool.
Our vision is nurturing lifelong learning and working together, we know that all children can thrive whilst at Te Kura o Ōpāwaho - Opawa School.
We look forward to meeting you and your child(ren) and continuing our learning journey together.
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou.
