Te Reo

Te Reo Māori Challenges with Whaea Tracy

Karakia

Challenge Tahi
Teach your whānau a karakia for kai.

E rongo, e rongo
Hōmai ngā tipu
Hei whakakī te tinana
Hei oranga
Aue kē, aue kē
Hui e, taiki e.

Himene

Challenge Rua
'He Honore' is a himene (hymn) we have learnt. We also sing it at the end of the Cultural Festival. The video has the words as well as some tamariki doing sign language. Karawhiua!

Waiata-ā-ringa

 Challenge Toru
'Tutira Mai' is one song that almost all the tamariki and kaiako know. However, we have been singing the wrong words and the tune is slightly different. Listen to the daughter of the composer explain how this came about. In the song, listen for the kupu 'Kia tapatahi, kia kotahi rā'. Finally, have a go at learning the actions.

Tongue Twister

Challenge Whā
This activity is to help with pronunciation of Māori vowels.
First say, "Are there three or two". Now, using the same sounds that are in those five words say a-e-i-o-u. If you take away the consonants, the vowel sounds should be the same.
Using the Māori vowels start with the top line and work your way down. If you make a mistake or stumble, start again. Who can keep a rhythm as they say it? Who can say it the fastest? Pai tū, pai hinga (Whatever the outcome!)

Mihi

Challenge Rima
Here is our school mihi. Remember, this is just one example of a mihi. Start from tallest, maunga, through to smallest, yourself.
Practise our mihi. Your hapū is your room number. Mine would be 'korūma ono te hapū'.
Tēnā koutou, Tēnā koutou, Tēnā koutou katoa.
Ko Te Iringa o Kahukura te maunga.

Ko Ōpāwaho te awa.
Ko matauranga te waka.
Ko Sally Ormandy te tumuaki.
Ko Ōpāwa te iwi.
Ko ruma ______ te hapū.
Ko ___________ tōkū ingoa.
Nō reira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa.

Try learning it off by heart. Kia kaha!
Can you remember your own personal mihi? Ask a family member for help if you get stuck.

Māori Wellbeing

Challenge Rima
Last year Jase Te Patu, a Māori yoga instructor, did a workshop with Room 12 around myths and legends. The tamariki did really well. Click on this link and choose a legend to listen to (Below is an example of one of the legends). Then join Jase and some children in movement. You will need some space to move. Ka rawe! (Excellent!)

Poi

Challenge Ono
Watch the video below to see Whaea Rochelle of Christchurch City Libraries make a poi. Some of you may recognise her from when she and Whaea Mātakiwi came in and taught us about the nine stars of Matariki.
Challenge Whitu
If you have the resources, make your own poi. Share what you've made on Seesaw.
Challenge Waru
Now, sing and poi to 'E Rere Taku Poi'. Have fun! (The girl in the middle has the right moves). Kei whea mai! (Awesome!)

Mahi Toi - Art
