Board Chat 2020
Te Kura o Ōpāwaho - Opawa School Board Chat December 2020
As we come to the end of another successful year at Te Kura o Ōpāwaho - Opawa School , it is an opportune moment to update you, the school community, on the workings of the Board of Trustees this year.
The 2020 school year has been an interesting one for all New Zealand schools, and we are no different. While the challenges for both our staff and students stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic are ongoing, it was incredible to see the flexibility and whanaungatanga that our staff showed towards our children during that difficult time. Thank you again.
For the Board of Trustees this year has again been dominated by the extensive renovation work that has continued across the school. While these projects at times seem to be never-ending, you can rest assured that much of the delays have been a direct result of our awesome property team of Deputy Principal Shevaun and Board member Fiona consistently fighting on behalf of our students to ensure that we are getting the best possible learning environment for our tamariki. The next phase of our plan is to address the current condition of the school hall, and investigate the possible renovation timeline for our school pool. There will also be improvements made to Rooms 17-19. While much time has passed, it is great seeing our children flourish in their new spaces, and the benefits are certainly tangible for our community.
The other major changes to our environment concern our outdoor play spaces. You would have noticed recently that the difficult decision was made to close our much-loved Big Adventure playground. Unfortunately, all structures have a finite lifespan, and this playground had reached the end of the time that it could be used safely by our children. The revitalisation of this area of our school is being incorporated into a wider conversation about our outdoor spaces, and there are exciting developments in the pipeline.
As a Board, we have been excited to see the academic progress at Te Kura o Ōpāwaho - Opawa School this year. At our last meeting we heard reports from two of our wonderful Te Kura o Ōpāwaho - Opawa School teachers about the great work that they have been undertaking around student wellbeing and emotion regulation, and the impact that this has on both staff and students. Our children are lucky to have such a dedicated and skilful team of teachers, and leaders that actively support and enable them to do such a great job. Thank you.
Finally, the Board of Trustees of Te Kura o Ōpāwaho - Opawa School thank the wider school community for their continued support, and wish all of you a very restful and enjoyable holiday break. We look forward to celebrating the continued successes of our tamariki in 2021.
